Asia warned of aids epidemic

The man leading the global fight against HIV/Aids says governments in Asia must wake up to the threat posed by the virus.

Peter Piot, the executive director of UNAIDS, says only the governments of Thailand and Cambodia have had any measurable success in slowing the spread of the virus in the region.

Speaking on the eve of the sixth International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific, Mr Piot warned that without effective prevention, Asia would soon have more people infected with the virus than Africa:

We already have India which has after South Africa, the largest number of HIV infected individuals - almost four million. And when I look at the size of the populations in Asia - think of China, think of Indonesia, India - then even moderate increases in the percentage of new infections will mean millions and millions more will become infected.
