Australia talks to East Asia about terrorism

Australia says it's had extensive discussions with East Asian Governments about the need for a global struggle against terrorism.

Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, says Australia has been briefing China, Japan, South Korea and the ASEAN states of Southeast Asia.

Mr Downer says ASEAN countries with Muslim communities have warned against generalised retaliation against Afghanistan, and Australia shares that concern.

If there's to be a retaliatory strike against terrorism and supporters of terrorism that any civillian casualties are kept to an absolute minimum. And this is a point I've made to the Americans last week and on previous occasions as well in telephone conversations. That we absolutely agree with them and everybody else that this is a struggle against terrorism, it's not an attack on Islam. But we do have to be particularly sensitive about the feelings of Islamic communities in countries in Southeast Asia.
