Sea battle of Sri Lankan coast

Sri Lankan defence officials say navy gunboats have sunk at least two Tamil rebel craft, in a fierce sea battle off the northeastern coast.

Officials say at least one sailor died, and all aboard the two rebel craft are believed to have perished.

There's been no reaction from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to the latest fighting.

It comes 12 days after a similar attack in the same area.

The Tamil Tigers are fighting for independence in Sri Lanka's north and east.

More than 60,000 people have been killed in fighting in the past three decades.
