Sir Lanka Parliament dissolved with new elections called

Sri Lanka's President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, has dissolved Parliament and ordered new elections.

The move comes after defections from her Peoples' Alliance coalition made it likely her government would lose a no-confidence vote brought by the opposition.

Sri Lanka's state-run radio says new elections to the 225-member Parliament will be held on December the 5th.

The announcement came after nine lawmakers quit President's Kumaratunga's coalition, reducing it to a minority in Parliament.

It was the second time in five months that Mrs Kumaratunga's government has faced a no-confidence vote.

The latest no-confidence motion was brought by the United National Party, the main opposition, which says the government cannot solve the country's most pressing problems - civil war and a crippling economic slowdown.
