German chancellor on Asia trip

Germany's Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has set off for a week of visits to Pakistan, India, China and Russia.

The trip is expected to focus on the US-led war against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and that country's future.

His first meeting will be with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf during a brief stopover in Islamabad.

Mr Schroeder's visit to India and China had been arranged months ago.

But, the tour has taken on new political significance in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
