East Timor makes its pitch at international tourism conference

International tourism leaders have gathered in the Australian city of Hobart, with the current global turmoil high on the agenda.

About 350 delegates at the World Tourism Convention will be discussing the impact of the terrorist attacks on the United States and the way forward.

The conference will also hear about the importance of tourism for East Timor.

The emerging nation's Foreign Minister, Jose Ramos-Horta, says that while East Timor still bears the scars from its independence struggle, the country is now peaceful and secure.

'If you like sports, scuba diving, if you like mountain climbing, if you like pristine beaches, if you like seafood, lobster and shrimps and no-one hassling you, you don't see beggars in the streets ... our people are poor, but they have incredible dignity. They don't beg."
