No visit to Irian Jaya for President Megawatti

Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri has cancelled a crucial visit to Irian Jaya, also known as West Papua.

Palace officials say she has the flu and has indefinitely cancelled her trip which was scheduled for tomorrow, the day the province's name is due to be officially changed from Irian Jaya to Papua.

However, the Coordinating Political and Security Minister Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono says the fallout from the murder of independence figure Theys Eluay and the rejection of the new special autonomy laws, are also reasons for the cancellation.

Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda has described his murder as a stab in the back for negotiations between Jakarta and the Papuan independence movement.
