UN Security Council approves East Timor independence date

The United Nations Security Council has approved May 20th as the date when the UN-administered territory of East Timor formally becomes independent.

The 15 nation council has endorsed the date recommended two weeks ago by East Timor's recently elected constituent assembly.

The date is the 28th anniversary of the founding of East Timor's first political party, the Timorese Social Democratic Association, which gave birth to the Fretilin independence movement against Indonesian rule.

Mari Alkatiri, secretary general of Fretilin, and chief minister in the transitional government, was in the chamber to hear the council's statement.
