Province vows to move out of fireworks industry
The head of China's southeastern Jiangxi province has vowed to clean up the lucrative fireworks business in his province following a series of explosions that have killed nearly 100 workers in the past year.
Provincial Communist Party boss Meng Jianzhu was quoted by the official Xinhua news agency as saying the province's economic development can't depend on one extremely dangerous industry.
The report said Mr Meng's order would put an end to Jiangxi's 700-year history of making fireworks, an industry which has employed 200,000 workers and had an annual GDP of *333 million dollars.
According to local reports, Mr Meng ordered inspections of all provincial fireworks factories and the shutting down of all those deemed "dangerous".
