Germany vows no sub sales to Taiwan

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has promised not to sell military submarines toTaiwan.

The pledge came during an address to university students in Beijing, where he's been leading a delegation to boost ties and cement business links.

Mr Schroeder says Germany's "one-China policy" rules out submarine sales to Taiwan, adding that Germany has turned down such requests in the past.

Germany is China's biggest European trading partner....and one of the few countries to make diesel submarines.

Correspondents say Taiwan has just four submarines - two barely seaworthy - and argues it needs several more to fend off any potential attack or blockade by China.
