Vietnam says it won't lease Can Rahn Bay naval base
Vietnam says it has no intention of allowing another country to use the Cam Ranh Bay naval base, which is being abandoned by the Russians.
First used by the colonial French and upgraded by the United States during the Vietnam War, the base offers strategic access to the sea lanes of the South China Sea. Moscow had rent-free use from 1979.
The government says it will tap into the potential and advantages of Cam Ranh in the most effective way to serve the development and defence of the country.
Both the United States and China are interested in the port in the southern province of Khanh Hoa.
The United States had suggested an open port arrangement that would allow warships of all nations to make calls.
