Australia Government urged to pressure Timor Sea gas lease holders

The Opposition leader in Australia's Northern Territory Denis Burke is urging the Federal Government to put pressure on the lease holders of gas fields in the Timor Sea to bring the gas on shore to Darwin.

Mr Burke says deadlines could be written into contracts.

"It could be a carrot and a stick for example in terms of if you do this you will get tax advantages for a number of years and remember it was those sorts of conditions that attracted them to the Timor Sea Gap in the first place. So there's a number of methods the Commonwealth can use providing they are focused on the objective of developing a new province for Australia in the national interest."
