Cambodia appeals for border treaties

Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk has appealed to neighboring countries to respect border treaties concluded with Cambodia since independence 48 years ago.

The king, who was speaking on National Independence Day, said despite efforts to resolve border issues through negotiations with Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, no clear results had been achieved.

Cambodia claims that Thailand has encroached between 200 and 3,000 metres in parts of its northern and western border.

Many Cambodians claim significant encroachments by Vietnam on Cambodia's eastern border in recent decades.

There far fewer claims of border encroachments by Laos.
