Cambodia assures Vietnam of good security during President's visit
The Cambodian government has assured Vietnam that its president does not face any security threat when he visits next week, as an anti-communist group that posed some danger has been dismantled.
President Tran Duc Luong cancelled a visit to Cambodia last year after a bungled attack on three government buildings on November the 24th, 2000 claimed by an anti-communist group, the Cambodian Freedom Fighters.
Six attackers and one civilian were killed and 12 injured when government soldiers repulsed the raid.
Following the attacks, the Cambodian government rounded up scores of alleged members of the CFF in a sweeping crackdown. The detainees were tried in recent months and nearly 60 men and women were sentenced to prison terms.
Security officials say the CFF is no longer a threat though the group has pledged to continue to launch attacks on Cambodian soil.
A spokesman at the Vietnamese Embassy in Hanoi says it has assurances that the security situation is stable.
