US carrier cleared to make Hong Kong port call
Beijing has given approval for a US aircraft carrier to make a port call in Hong Kong on its way to the Arabian Sea, in what is seen as the clearest sign yet of China's support for the US-led war on terrorism.
The USS John C. Stennis, a nuclear-powered vessel believed to be on its way to joining other American aircraft carriers to launch bombing missions in the Arabian Sea, is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong on November 29 for a five-day stay.
The South China Morning Post reports It will be accompanied by its battle group comprising seven ships.
China's attitude to the US-led action against the Taliban militia, suspected terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network has shifted from initial hesitance to strong backing.
