China protests against Dalai Lama visit to Portugal
China has formally protested against the forthcoming visit to Portugal of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
The Chinese embassy in Portugal says Beijing is clearly against the visit, even if it is private.
Portugal's foreign affairs ministry has declined to confirm whether it has received a formal protest letter.
The ministry says the visit has no political character because the invitation was made by non-governmental bodies.
The Dalai Lama is expected to arrive later today in the northern town of Oporto for a private and religious five-day vist.
