Gusmao arrives in West Timor
East Timor's independence leader Xanana Gusmao has arrived in Indonesian West Timor on a visit aimed at promoting reconciliation with former militia enemies.
He also wants to encourage tens of thousands of refugees to return home.
During his three-day visit, Mr Gusmao will meet politicans, church leaders and leaders of the former pro-Indonesian militias.
Police have said almost 600 police or troops will provide security during the trip.
An estimated quarter of a million East Timorese fled or were forced by militias across the border into West Timor after East Timor's vote for independence in 1999.
Most of the remaining East Timorese refugees still in West Timor are from pro-Indonesia militia groups or are hardline political opponents of Mr Gusmao.
