East Timorese electoral officials in Australia

A group of East Timorese electoral officials is in Australia's Northern Territory to observe how the Federal election has been organised and will be counted.

The Australian Electoral Commission, along with AusAID and the United Nations, organised the excursion this week to give the officials a first-hand look at all factors involved in running an election.

The Commission's Kerry Heisner says the Territory is a good place for the East Timorese to observe an election as conditions such as remoteness and the weather are similiar.

Mr Heisner says the group is examining all aspects of the ballot.

Everything to printing of ballot papers, all the administrative arrangements all the sorts of levels of training that we do for polling staff in Australia, the types of ballots we use, for example prepoll voting or postal voting actually meeting with some of the parties and indepdent candidates.
