Alexander Downer looks forward to East Timor's independence

Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says East Timor will have a successful future to look forward to when it marks its independence in May next year.

Mr Downer met East Timor's Cabinet Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jose Ramos Horta, in Adelaide, to work out Australia's involvement in the lead up to the celebrations.

Mr Ramos Horta wants Australia to play a visible role.

Mr Downer says it will be an important time.

"I think we can look forward now to a day of independence on the 20th of May 2002, as a day when East Timor will become a nation in it's own right governed by it's own people in a stable and secure environment."
