Afghan factions sign pact
Four Afghan factions have signed a pact to create a new administration headed by an anti-Taliban battlefield commander
The move concludes an historic agreement aimed at restoring peace and stability to the nation. The interim administration will be headed by Hamid Karzai .. a moderate Muslim whose fighters are part of the push to oust the Taliban from their last stronghold in Kandahar.
Envoys of the Northern Alliance, the former King Mohammad Zaher Shah, and two smaller exile groups signed the U-N mediated accord after nine days of talks outside the German city of Bonn. U-N envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, says the interim cabinet headed by Mr Karzai is the first step toward a broad-based government representing all of Afghanistan's ethnic groups:
"The United Nations and the entire international community feel a tremendous sense of hope in the knowledge that an agreement has been reached here in Bonn, that provides an opposrtunity to end the tragic conflict that has plagued Afghanistan for over two decades."
