Afghanistan's new interim government sworn in

The new interim Government in Afghanistan has been sworn in amid tight security in the capital, Kabul.

At a ceremony attended by tribal leaders and foreign dignitaries, the leader of the incoming administration, Hamid Karzai, paid tribute to all those who have died in decades of conflict.

He said the sun was rising again on Afghanistan and promised to do everything possible to bring peace and stability.

The United Nations Special Envoy to Afghanistan, Lakdar Brahimi, said it was a momentous day for the country.

After years of bitter war and conflict, power is being transferred from one administration to another not under the fire of guns but peacefully and pursuant to a political agreement. This agreement, though far from perfect, has been warmly welcomed by the people of Afghanistan and strongly supported by all the countries of the world.
