Afghanistan's new government sworn in
A new Afghan government led by Pashtun tribal leader Hamid Karzai has been sworn in in Kabul to lay the groundwork for rebuilding the shattered country after 23 years of war and destruction. Former Afghan President Rabbani, the U.N.-recognized leader of the country, officially handed over power to interim leader Karzai 76 days after the United States launched its military campaign to oust the Taliban. The 30-member Afghan Interim Authority, replacing the collapsed Taliban regime, will rule the country for a maximum of six months until a traditional grand council convenes.
The council will select a new government tasked with drawing up a constitution during its 18-month rule, which will ultimately pave the way for setting up an independent government. Karzai, speaking to the about 2,000 Afghans and members of the international community gathered in the Interior Ministry in Kabul, vowed to root out corruption and urged his administration not to be tempted by bribes .
