Malaysian government increases deportation of foreigners

Malaysian authorities will speed up deportation of foreigners found working illegally in response to a riot this week which destroyed an immigration detention camp.

Immigrants now caught working illegally in Malaysia will spend no longer than two weeks in detention before being repatriated to their home country.

Earlier this week, more than two thousand inmates at a detention centre in southern Johor state went on a rampage.

Fire razed four of five accommodation blocks.

Most of the Indonesian inmates were deported within hours of the riot after officials could not find room to house them at other camps.
