Muslim lawyers in Kashmir protest new anti-terrorism laws
Muslim lawyers in Indian-administered Kashmir have marched through the streets of Srinagar to protest against India's strict new anti-terrorism law. Several dozen lawyers lead by Kashmir Bar president Nazir Ronga started out from Kashmir's lower court to march against the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance. However, the lawyers were stopped by police just 100 metres into their demonstration and retreated into the lower court complex.
The new ordinance, which was introduced last month by Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's cabinet, has been subjected to widespread criticism and has yet to be formally passed by parliament. The law, which grants sweeping powers to the security forces, seeks to curb funding to suspected terrorist groups, confiscate their property and intercept their communications.
