Special human rights commission for East Timor
A special human rights court to try Indonesian military, police and civilians accused of crimes in East Timor in 1999 will start operating next month.
Chief justice of the Supreme Court, Bagir Manan, says the court will be ready to sit on January 15. Indonesian prosecutors are preparing dossiers on 18 people, including a two-star general, as suspects in cases of gross human rights violations in the turbulent months surrounding East Timor's vote for independence.
Candidate judges have already been selected to sit on the special court and are waiting to be installed and sworn in by President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
