Two Australian, 10 US soldiers reported captured in Afghanistan

There are reports that a faction of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan has captured two Australian and ten American special forces soldiers.

The unconfirmed report suggests the soldiers were captured after fierce fighting between rival factions of the Alliance.

Eric Campbell reports from Kabul.

"For three days now, fierce fighting has raged between rival factions of the Northern Alliance around the town of Pul-i-khumri in Northern Afghanistan. The area is controlled by followers of the minority Ismaili sect of Islam with strong ties to the powerful Uzbek warlord, General Abdul Rashid Dostum. Sources in Kabul say they were fighting off attempts by a faction loyal to former President Burhanuddin Rabbani to capture the city. The Afghan Islamic Press, with close ties to the Taliban, said US aircraft bombarded the pro-Rabbani positions to defend the minority Ismailis. It says Australian and American special forces troops were captured by the Rabbani faction and taken to the cities of Kunduz and Khwaja Bahauddin. The leader designate of the Afghan interim government, Hamid Karzai, last night denied any knowledge of the fighting."
