48 people dead after cold snap hits India
At least 48 people have died of hypothermia in northern India as a biting cold snap gripped the region.
The Press Trust of India says the northern state of Uttar Pradesh accounted for 30 deaths, while in the eastern state of Bihar 15 people had died.
Rail, road and air services were crippled as a dense fog covered several parts of Uttar Pradesh as temperatures dipped well below normal.
The Indian Meteorological department says there will be no respite either from the cold or the fog for at least the next week.
