Cambodian leader orders remains of Khmer Rouge victims properly kept
Local authorities and government institutions in Cambodia have been ordered to pay more attention to preserving memorial sites containing the remains of victims of the Khmer Rouge.
Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Sen, issued the order, saying he is concerned the memorial sites are not being properly and regularly maintained.
He says provincial and municipal authorities will co-operate to properly control, renovate and restore all memorials that have so far already been preserved.
The order comes as Cambodia and the United Nations are still discussing how to proceed with the planned establishment of a tribunal to bring former Khmer Rouge leaders to justice.
At least 1.7 million Cambodians are believed to have died during the Khmer Rouge's rule between 1975 and 1979.
