NGO's reject Jakarta commission on Papuan leader's murder
Moves by Indonesia to set up an independent commission to probe the killing of a West Papua independence leader, have been rejected.
Three prominent non-governmental organizations in West Papua, also known as Irian Jaya, rejected the commission into the killing of Theys Eluay, chairman of the Papuan Presidium Council.
The N-G-O's also say their own investigation indicates the involvement of the Indonesian Defense Force in the killing.
The Institute for Human Rights Study and Advocacy, the Legal Aid Foundation and the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Torture, say the government is trying to direct the case into an ordinary criminal case.
Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri has ordered the national police chief to speed up the investigation into the killing.
It also comes before her one-day visit to West Papua to deliver a new special autonomy law that will give the province a bigger share of revenue derived there.
