Internal security situation big challenge in Afghanistan As the world tallies up its pledges of aid assistance to Afghanistan, adequate security remains the biggest obstacle to relief getting to those people in need. "In the latest incident, 40-tonnes of wheat was seized from a warehouse run by a World Food Program partner organisation in Afghanistan's northwestern Faryab Province. Armed Uzbeks stormed the compound smashing vehicles and beating staff. It follows last week's theft of 40 tonnes of wheat from a food convoy south of the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, by local soldiers. When World Food Program staff complained, local authorities dismissed the seizure as a misunderstanding and promised to return the stolen food. But, U-N officials are concerned that thefts of relief supplies, especially throughout the winter, could increase. 22/01/2002 1:28:51 PM | ABC Radio Australia News
