India puts its forces on high alert
India has put its forces on high alert on the Pakistani border but does not expect an outbreak of war.
India's Defence Minister, George Fernandes, said the December 13 attack on India's parliament, made it imperative to get the defence forces into a state of "very high alert."
Mr Fernandes confirmed that after the attack, which New Delhi blames on militant groups based in Islamabad, Pakistani forces had moved to the frontlines but had not taken up any battle position.
The defence minister discounted the possibility of war, saying he would like to remain optimistic.
Earlier today Pakistani troops reportedly opened fire on an Indian border post, killing two Indian soldiers and wounding three others.
India's Border Security Force reported the clash took place at Bain Galahar, 40 kilometres southwest of Jammu, the winter capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state.
