India warns Pakistan of "strong measures," criticises US
India's Defence Minister George Fernandes has warned Pakistan of "strong measures" if it fails to take convincing action against Islamic militants. In an interview to be broadcast on the Aaj Tak television channel, Mr Fernandes said "no time limit" had been set for Islamabad to act on India's demands to shut down Pakistan-based groups blamed for last month's attack on the Indian parliament. But he said if the problem is not solved amicably, India will be forced to take strong measures.
The parliament attack has triggered a tense military stand-off between India and Paksitan, who have massed troops on both sides of their common border.
Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf is expected to make a key address to the nation in the next few days, in which he has promised to unveil new steps to "check any form of militancy within Pakistani society."
