Suspected Muslim separatists kill six in Thai police attacks
Gunmen have attacked five police checkpoints in southern Thailand killing five police officers and a civilian guard.
The attackers laid siege to three police checkpoints in Narathiwat province and one each in Yala and Pattani provinces on Monday night.
Two policemen were shot and stabbed with swords and a policeman and a security guard were shot dead in Narathiwat.
Two police were shot dead in Yala and Pattani.
Interior Minister Purachai Piemsoomboon said the attacks may be in revenge for the killing of a Muslim separatist leader last month.
However police said only two attacks were clearly linked to Muslim radicals.
