Cambodia a step closer to ratifying treaty on internatinal court
The Cambodian Senate has voted to ratify the Rome treaty for establishing an International Criminal Court.
Secretary general of the Senate, Oum Sarith, says the ratification won unanimous approval from all 56 senators in attendance on Thursday.
The lower house, the National Assembly , has already approved the ratification.
In a final, formal step, the ratification will be signed by acting head of state, Chea Sim, on behalf of King Norodom Sihanouk, who is currently undergoing a medical checkup in China.
The treaty, which was conceived in 1998, would create the first permanent international judicial institution for trying individuals accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
So far, it has been ratified by 47 nations, 13 short of the number needed to empower the court.
