Japan approves plan for US military airport
Japan has approved a plan to build an airport for the U.S. military on a coral reef off the southern island of Okinawa.
Observers say the decision could spark a backlash by conservationists who say the project threatens the environment while also enraging local residents who want the U.S. military to leave the island.
The new airport off Nago City will contain a Marine helicopter base that Washington agreed in 1996 to move from central Okinawa because of complaints of noise pollution.
Nago residents, in a 1997 referendum, opposed the relocation.
