Five jailed in south China for inciting children to protest
In southern China, five people have been jailed for up to 10 years for inciting school children and their parents to protest over high tuition fees and taxes.
The protests in February last year, resulted in two days of riots in Guangdong province.
Government offices were burned and policemen beaten during the clashes between about 1,000 students, parents and about 300 police officers.
The ringleader, a farmer named Zhao Guoqiang, and four others, were sentenced on Monday by the Chaoyang City People's Court to up to ten years in prison.
Observers say the demonstration points to growing unrest over excessive taxes set by rural officials, who often don't abide by the law.
