Former Taliban ambassador returns to Afghanistan

Former Taliban ambassador to Islamabad Abdul Salam Zaeef has returned to Afghanistan after being refused permission to stay in Pakistan./

The foreign ministry said after the termination of diplomatic relations with the Taliban government, Mullah Zaeef ceased to have diplomatic status.

A spokesman declined to specify when Zaeef left or how the journey was made, but said his wife and children, who lived with him in Islamabad, had been allowed to stay on "a little longer".

Meanwhile Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has reportedly escaped Afghanistan's southern mountainous area of Baghran and disappeared.

Anti-Taliban forces had surrounded the area and were negotiating the surrender of Mullar Omar and his supporters.
