More deaths ahead of local elections in Cambodia
The lead up to landmark local elections in Cambodia has been hit by a string of deaths.
Two women candidates, one of their husbands and a female party activist have been shot dead over the past four days.
At least seven candidates from the Sam Rainsy Party and the royalist FUNCINPEC party have been killed ahead of official campaigning which begins on January 18th.
The communal election on February 3rd is the first direct local elections since the UN-aided transition to democratic rule in 1993 ... and will be a critical test of the country's fledgling post-Khmer Rouge democracy.
The United States and the European Union, which have sent election monitors, have stressed that intimidation of any kind would not be tolerated.
