UN coordinating Afghan avalanche rescue effort

The United Nations says rescuers are battling to free a number of people trapped in at least 20 vehicles buried by an avalanche near the Salang Tunnel that connects north and south Afghanistan.

Teams from the Red Cross, the United Nations, and the International Security Assistance Force are involved in the rescue, but the operation is being hampered by a lack of snow clearing equipment.

The UN says while the number of people trapped is not known, the route between Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif is mainly used by buses, mini-buses and trucks.
