Bangladesh PM seeks World Bank support

Bangladesh's Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has asked the World Bank to help her new government's development programmes.

Ms Zia told the World Bank's visiting senior vice president and chief economist Nicholas Stern, Bangladesh has adopted short and long-term strategies to strengthen the economy as the government inherited a shattered economy.

Ms Zia, whose Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led coalition came to power in October elections, called for increased World Bank support for development efforts in social sectors like agriculture, rural development, education and health.

Mr Stern is in Dhaka for talks with Bangladeshi officials ahead of an aid club meeting of donor counties and agencies due to be held in Paris later this year.
