Colin Powell to visit India later today

America's Secretary of State, Colin Powell, will visit India later today after a series of meetings in Pakistan.

As South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports, Mr Powell's trip is designed to ease tensions following the military buildup sparked by militants storming the Indian Parliament a month ago:

"Colin Powell's urging India and Pakistan to observe restraint: "We lead a campaign against terrorism, not a campaign with these two countries fighting each other." The rival nuclear neighbours have both said they're ready and willing to go to war, following a month of severing diplomatic links and stopping air, rail and bus services between the two countries. The U-S Secretary of State has been talking with leaders on both sides by phone for the last few weeks, sometimes several times a day. Tensions have eased slightly over the last week or so following promises by Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf to reign in Islamic extremists though India remains skeptical about his ability to deliver on his announced measures.
