US urges India and Pakistan to resolve standoff politically

America's Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has urged India and Pakistan to use politics to resolve their differences.

South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports:

"The U-S secretary of state began his five day tour of Asia in the Pakistani capital in the hope that India and Pakistan will step back from their military standoff. "The important thing now is for both sides to make a political judgement that the way out of this crisis is political and diplomatic and not through conflict." This latest crisis between the rival nuclear neighbours began just over a month ago when militants stormed the Indian parliament leaving 14 dead including the five attackers. India blames Pakistan and has amassed an estimated half a million troops along its border. Under growing pressure Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf's banned five Islamic militant organisations and outlined plans to tackle religious extremism. Those measures have eased tensions a little but India insists it won't be satisfied until President Musharraf's
words are met with action.
