Vietnam cracks down on illegal logging
Vietnam's Prime Minister Phan Van Khai is reported to have ordered a crackdown on illegal loggers in the face of continued violent attacks against forest rangers.
The Lao Dong trade union newspaper says the prime minister has instructed the agriculture ministry to spearhead a campaign with local authorities.
Attacks by loggers killed two forest rangers and seriously wounded another 11 last year, according to the Ho Chi Minh City newspaper Thanh Nien.
It says around 55,000 cases of illegal logging were uncovered during the year.
Loggers have used knives, guns and explosives against rangers as a sharp reduction in licensed fellings has made illegal logging ever more profitable.
Authorised timber extraction has been cut sharply from 1.5 million cubic metres in 1996 to just 900,000 last year.
