UN, Vietnam and Cambodia agree to deal on asylum seekers
The United Nations, Cambodia and Vietnam have broken a longstanding deadlock and agreed to allow about one-thousand Vietnamese asylum seekers who have fled into Cambodia to be voluntarily repatriated. The agreement was reached at a tripartite meeting in Phnom Penh that lasted for most of the day and was reached after Hanoi agreed to longstanding UN demands for access to Vietnam's central highlands. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees says its officials will accompany the Vietnamese during their return home.
The asylum seekers have pitched camp in Cambodia's remote northeastern province of Mondulkiri under the auspices of the UN. Rights group Human Rights Watch has expressed concern for the safety of the asylum seekers in their homeland saying nobody should be repatriated until independent monitors are allowed in to ensure there were no reprisals.
