Rich nations pledge almost 6 billion in aid to Afghanistan
Rich nations have promised almost six-billion dollars in aid to start rebuilding Afghanistan. However, an attack on an aid convoy and sabre rattling between rival warlords in Afghanistan have highlighted fears about security and stability. This came as interim government leader Hamid Karzai told industrial nations meeting in Tokyo and pledging his shattered country large amounts of aid that the help was desperately needed. He said he needed money quickly to shore up his administration and rescue a country where life expectancy is 43 years and one in four children dies before the age of five.
The European Union, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United States unveiled their multi-million dollar pledges before delegates from more than 60 countries and organisations.
In Afghanistan, UN officials said at least 700-thousand people faced starvation and exposure to bitter winter weather.
