Indonesia needs to restore relations with Malaysia
Indonesia's Vice-President says his government needs to make neighbourly approaches to Malaysia after labour riots there prompted a temporary ban on hiring new Indonesian workers.
Hamzah Haz says he may consider visiting Kuala Lumpur because there are a lot of opportunities for Indonesian workers there and their affairs are also his problem.
Some 400 Indonesians staged a protest at a textile factory in the central state of Negeri Sembilan on January 17 after police tried to detain 16 of their co-workers for drug abuse.
Of the 147 arrested after the riot, in which police vehicles were overturned and officers stoned, 91 have been deported and more are due to be sent home.
Three days later about 70 Indonesian construction workers armed with machetes went on the rampage and damaged food stalls run by fellow Indonesians south of Kuala Lumpur.
Indonesian ministers have apologised on behalf of the government for the riots and two officials have been sent to Malaysia to try to help resolve the problem.
