Legal action launched to end Australian asylum seeker deal with PNG
An Australian human rights lawyer has launched legal action in a bid to end Australia's agreement with Papua New Guinea to process asylum-seekers.
Eric Vadarlis has lodged a claim in the Australian Federal Court demanding that P-N-G's Manus Island processing centre be immediately closed.
The Australian government says all detainees in the centre are in good health, and has rejected recent media reports that more than 15 detainees contracted malaria.
But Mr Vadarlis says nothing is being done to stop the spread of malaria among the asylum-seekers, and Australia has breached its duty of care towards the detainees.
I don't know about the level of care on Manus Island, I don't know how many doctors are there, and I'm not prepared to believe the government that any number of four doctors are there. But remember that only some of these people have now got malaria, and what about the balance of them? What is being done to ensure that the balance of them don't get malaria. We all know that it's a a malaria-infested country, and they shouldn't be there.
