Indonesian government blames former regime for floods
Hundreds of residents and activists have demonstrated in Jakarta, parts of which are still under water after severe flooding hit the Indonesian capital, about two weeks ago.
Some 300 people demanded the resignation of city governor Sutiyoso for his administration's failure to deal with the disaster, but he has rejected resignation calls, saying the floods are a natural disaster.
Environmentalists have blamed the uncontrolled development of green spaces and natural water catchment areas, inadequate flood prevention projects and broken or blocked drains. Indonesia's Vice President Hamzah Haz blames the government of former president Suharto for nationwide flooding, saying the regime was too corrupt to ensure good environmental planning.
