Australia pushes case for a trial of Cambodia's Khmer Rouge

Australia is pressing the United Nations to resume talks with Cambodia on a tribunal to try Khmer Rouge leaders for atrocities.

The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, says Australia has joined other countries in formally calling on the UN not to abandon the negotiations.

Mr Downer says Australia regrets the UN decision on February the eighth to withdraw from talks on creating the tribunal.

He says the UN acted in haste and without consulting other countries involved with Cambodia.

No member of the Khmer Rouge should be able to escape from the terrible deeds that they committed during the 1970s. This tribunal is an opportunity to bring those people to justice. And it's very important that the United Nations just doesn't abandon altogether discussions with the Cambodians but continues to work with them.
