Asian election monitors urge Cambodian electoral reform
Thai-based election monitors have urged Cambodia's National Election Committee to reform the electoral legal process in the wake of historic local polls.
The Asian Network for Free Elections says the current election law is silent, ambivalent or weak in a number of issues and a review needs to be carried out before the next general elections in 2003.
Cambodia's local elections were held on February 3rd in what observers called an atmosphere of political threats, intimidation, killings and vote buying.
The elections were dominated by the Cambodian People's Party.
The opposition Sam Rainsy Party, which alleged systematic assassinations in the pre-poll period, also improved its standing.
